Russell,

Thanks for agreeing to check out my outline of a story for your Torchwood series. I've attached a zip containing the episode in Word format and plain text in case you're one of those crazy anti-Microsoft people.

The brief summary is: an American family visiting Stonehenge accidentally discover that the circle is a portal to parallel Earths thanks to an old piece of alien technology in their camper van, one ends up kidnapped by druids, and the Torchwood group investigate. Features chase scene and heart-wrenching decision by Captain Jack at the end because I know you like that sort of thing.

Looking forward to hearing how you liked it (or not).

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark

That's really well done for a first draft. I'm still reading it now because I cannot change the font size down from 72 pixels in my copy of Word and I have to sit twelve feet from the monitor. A techy person from the BBC is coming over tomorrow to look at it.
You have managed to capture most of the personalities really well and I think we'd certainly like to explore fitting your story into the next series. There are a few changes I'd like to suggest if you don't mind. Some of these changes will be necessary due to other upcoming stories and the surprise in store for the start of season 2 but others are just to flow with the series feel.
  • Can you expand some of the background story around the American family at the start? Try to add some unimportant, real-life sort of scenarios into their trip towards Stonehenge. Perhaps Thomas and Mike could have a lovers quarrel and then make up?
  • Although Gwen and Owen are a couple now they won't be in the next series (don't tell anyone ;)). Can you rewrite their scenes as Gwen and Toshiko please. And Toshiko will only have one arm. I think it's the left one but I'm not sure so try not to be specific. I.e. don't let her drive or fire catapults.
  • I'm not keen on Jack's alien contact for details on the device. We'll be changing his name from Gamma D'Agruz to Omega B'Ahmerz unless you've got any objections.
There'll be more once I get to the end of the second act.

Thanks again, RTD.

Russell,

I've made a few changes in the newly-attached zip but not quite as you suggested, I hope you don't mind.

Thomas is Mike's dad so I'm not sure a lovers' quarrel is appropriate. However, I've added in some general dialogue which helps to prepare the groundwork for Mike and his twin sister Megan's telepathy at the end of the story.

I'm surprised about Gwen and Toshiko. I know they've both kissed other women in the series but I didn't think they were that way inclined as a general rule. I hope Owen is still in the series though; I know he's funny-looking but he's got a good character. Besides, his fighting skills are needed against the druids, of course. I assume you've reached that part in the story by now.

By the way - you might want to rethink the alien's name :) - Omega B'Ahmerz sounds like "Oh Mega Bummers".

Hope to get more feedback soon,

Mark

Ignore the last email, thanks. The BBC tech guy has sorted it out. I have a new keyboard.

I understand what you're saying about the American family but I think we could change them into a group of male friends from a top college. We then don't have to set up the twins' telepathy since close friends know what each other is thinking anyway. The audience will spot a setup straight away. Plus you can then keep in the quarrel and the making up afterwards. Keep it tasteful and perhaps cut away from the rocking van to the stone circle slowly.

We'll want to move from Stonehenge to just a general circle of stones somewhere near Cardiff. It cuts down on production and will fit in better with the druids and allow us to feature their sex-based rituals. You don't need to worry about that in your story though. I can add that in nearer the time.

Other points now:
  • Owen will still be around but he will not be able to fight very well from his wheelchair and his husband Ianto always stays close to care for him. You'll need to come up with something new there. I'm sure you won't disappoint.
  • I think everyone realises that Gwen and Toshiko will be drawn togther over the series because of their disappointments with people of the opposite sex. Don't worry, it will come across totally naturally and won't look contrived at all in the episode Gwen's Dangerous Pink Curtains and their relationship will be fully-developed before your story.
  • Thanks for pointing out the alien name :) I'm sure there would have been conspiracy theories abound about me advancing some sort of homosexual agenda in all my TV programmes if that had got out. We'll just have to give some more thought to that but at the moment I'm liking Menzrodz. How about you?
  • The chase of the druid cavalry by the Torchwood Range Rover is great but could be tricky to get past the producers because of costs. Can you try an alternative with a foot chase? I've tried to subtly develop running as a means of action and excitement in the series.
RTD.

P.S. Can you change the American college lovers into a Welsh academical rugby team? They'll be more likely to have an interest in druid fertility cults which will be important for maintaining the realism that keeps people watching the series.

Thanks. RTD.

Russell,

I'll make some changes but I'm not sure I'm too happy about this. I understand that there has to be some leeway when writing a story for an episodic serial but - as I see it - my story about an American family who visit Stonehenge, open up a parallel existence where the druids rule England and steal the girl, and who get help from Torchwood to get her back and close the portal, exploring familial telepathy along the way and including a dramatic chase across the Salisbury plains is now about a gay rugby team investigating some stones in Wales because of their interest in fertility - even though they're all men. Huh? - and needing the Torchwood team (now consisting of a lesbian couple one of whom has a disability, a gay couple one of whom is confined to a chair, and Christ knows what else) with the aid of an alien with a humorous name to help recover their kidnapped member from the all-male druid cult in another dimension through the awesome power of running.

Are you sure I'm not missing something? End of episode group orgy? Parallel dimension makeover? Inner monologue of Captain Jack critiquing druidic fashion disasters?

Mark.

Mark, that's a fantastic idea about Jack's inner voice! It's the sort of characteristic that's just perfect. The viewers will love that there's a part of Jack that's just like them.

Everything else: spot on!

Just wanted to say that this week's Torchwood was utter shit. I thought it was a scifi program not a faux emo ghost story with a "wow how awe inspiring and original" message at the end. Perhaps they can start inserting the message "Bad Poof" into each episode

That is very kool.

Is it possible for you to pass his address on to others?

If so this would be great as I would really like to contact him.

Wasn't too kean on Ghost Machine my self didn't seem Torchwood at all. Anyway The X Files did a ghost episode called Shadows. Know Ghosts ain't Science Fiction. Ghosts are more horror still they did a few ghostly things in Doctor Who such as Ghost Light.

Should be possible to contact RTD via email he does have the Internet I've seen him with one in the background of his lounge near the Windows facing Set Tea on a Documentary about Doctor Who once.

He must have an Email could be with BT.

Try btinternet.com

Or Yahoo.com or co.uk

Don't exspect an answer straight away especially if he's busy working on the New Doctor Who Series Series 3 Season 29.

I think there should be a Doctor Who episode where the Doctor's in trouble, uses the recall signal and one of his past selves appears. It would be interesting to see Martha's reaction when she discovers the Doctor can change his face!

PS/ My brother and I think the other Time Lord who survived the War is The Master!

my email address is breedonlad@hotmail.com so post back replies asap, just a thought ran through my head 1 nite wen i was watching doctor who, like a little idea, but i no it would alienate people in the whole mythology of doctor who, but what about an episode featuring god himself appearing in it, i no it seem ridcolous, but it would be really interesting, to see 2 great powerful being bickering with each other, but at the end not actually proving for sure whether it was god or not. i think it would be decent and noble 2 write up an treatment 4 an episode like that, because personally i think thats waht doctor who is missing and thats religion. im not a religious person myself, i mean i do believe that that we didnt just get here by chance, but it would be so fascinating to see russel or whoever play that episode out, plz write bk asap thanks

jen- a concerned Torchwood fan
Hi, I've been a huge fan of Torchwood since it first aired on BBC three and have watched every single episode without fail. I can't believe that its only going ot be a five part serious, after all the success its had going from bbc 3 to 3 now to one?
Why? Why change something that is already brilliant. It sounds good to have a five part story but its not fair on us fans who have been there from the beginning becasue we can only watch five episodes a year now. Why not have two lots of five in a year, or do a five part serial and then normal episodes? Don't you think the original fans of Torchwood are going to be fed-up or watching the same storyline for five episodes or at least that they won't be happy that there's only going to be five episodes.
I am concerned that, even though it might be a great five episodes, the series is going to suffer and so are the fans because the series is being diminished from a huge series to a mini-series. I think that this is unfair to the fans, we had to loose all those big characters and now we were losing Torchwood as we know it.
Any chance that we'll get a proper Torchwood series after this five part mini- series.

We are so upset that you are leaving from being the Doctor. Also in the Christmas special 2008 when David Morrissey says the one the only the best. He is wrong because you are the one the only and the best doctor ever.
Can you try and stay for a bit longer as the Doctor?

I'm no professional (just an aspiring author) but i think the best and most dramatic episode for a regeneration would be something along the lines of the following;
Another of the tricksters brigade encounters the doctor and...changes time so the Time Lords won the Time War.

The doctor has to make a heartbreaking choice; Galifrey...or the Earth.
Galifrey or Rose.

A great doctor who special would be the Doctor visiting the small town of Eureka, and while in the town, he regenerates. He and all the residents would fight off an alien attack, and Stark and Carter would come back for the 2 hour special. In the beginning his Tardis stops to refuel, and he comes to check out a time disturbance that happened earlier{ when Stark disappears} , he brings Stark back, and cyberman, impared Daleks, Gorgons, and Beverly attack because the time fracture, small at first, breaks open and brings all these enemies. Sarah Jane, the Torchwood team, and Martha Jones would come. The doctor would be hidding for about 30 min. and then he would come out to face his worst enemies. During the fight he will tell all of Eureka who he is, after he speaks, he is hit, and regenerates into the next Doctor. It will then open new series for every show that was blended into the the special.

Can you please e-mail Russel T and tell him that I have become very emotional distressed by the loss of Ianto on Torchwood and that I believe the series will truly suffer if it continues with out. You blew up the hub which in itself was like a character so essentially it's like they took two characters from us without warning! I can't take this man! I had an emotional commitment to Ianto and him and Jack were just starting, there's just a big hole where hope use to be now!
24 Jul 2009 04:19
Hannah: I'm not saying this to be cruel, but rather to try to help you come to terms with something called 'real life'. Torchwood is fictional. Ianto is fictional. Jack is fictional. The hub is a set. A fictional set. The emails I 'sent' to Russell T. Davies are fictional. His 'replies' to me were - you guessed it - fictional. Russell T. Davies is, himself, fictional, and the result of the BBC's Writing Morphotronic Creation Unit based in Shepherd's Bush. Your emotional commitment may be real. However it is merely the result of chemical reactions within your brain and unless you suffer some neurological accident you will find that the passing of time has a way of reducing the effects.

Mark: Just commenting to say that the email-saga and the comments it has inspired are brilliant. Epically funny, in fact. This is precisely what I needed to perk myself up after a gruelling fresher's fortnight. (You think those guys drink? Try being T-total and living with them!)

The exchange between yourself and 'Russell' is very well crafted, and I like the way that you openly satirise Davies's work, yet do so tastefully. 'Omega B'Ahmerz' delighted me.

I also applaud you for getting so many imbeciles to think you actually had contact with him, and urge anyone who decides to comment first, read the piece later to accept the fact that RTD is a very elusive man. It's not as easy as looking for an email address and sending off a script to get published. If you're serious about it, attempt to publish your work online (there are massive online Torchwood/Doctor Who fanfiction communities who would welcome your work with open arms). Alternatively, get an agent. If you want a script to become the next episode of Doctor Who, apply to an agency first, as this gives you more credibility as far as the writers of the show are concerned, and gives you more of an opportunity to make a name for your writing before hand.
